coWork the World is an exciting new project to gather together a group of like-minded people to travel the world and coWork along the way. Travelling the world non-stop for a year sounds like something only for the wealthy or retired, but trans-tasman digital consultant & entrepreneur is convinced that the average person can affordably coWork the World in today’s tech driven environment.
“I wanted to travel and explore the world but continue to work along the way. Tourist packages are so full on with activities and movement every day, you hardly have time to soak it all in. I remember when I went on a Europe tour in 2007 we spent more time travelling from one destination to another in a bus than actually enjoying the destination. We would arrive at a destination in the late afternoon and have until the next morning to soak it all in. If we weren’t awake, ready and on the bus the next morning by 7am, it would leave without us, meaning we’d have to find our own way to the next destination. It was really full on and I hardly remember much other than the inside of that bus! The sad part is that I haven’t gone back to Europe since and I’d hate to have that as my last memory of such a beautiful place.
coWork the World is different, the numbers will be capped at a reasonable size group of 30 and we’ll always be stationed at one place for quite a few days up to a couple of weeks or more. It’s less go, go, go and more travel, explore and coWork.”
It’s an ambitious project involving over 20 destinations, 6 continents, 7 legs of the journey, 1 full year and 30 like-minded nomads. Participants can apply for 1 or all 7 legs of the journey, which includes; Europe, Eastern Europe, Canada & USA, South America, Africa, India & Asia, Australia & New Zealand. Each leg goes on for different durations, from as little as 30 days, up to as much as 80 days.
Participants will have the independence and freedom to hang around at each destination or go for trips to neighbouring spots, towns, cities or countries. It’s a simple setup with what’s looks to be a good quality mix of countries and cities across each leg. There should be more than enough to do at each destination even if you decide to stay there the whole time.
“We’ve planned for just over 20 destinations in the whole remote year itinerary, however there’s no reason why you couldn’t extend that to many more destinations by setting up your own micro trips along the way.”
The real benefit of travelling in this way is that you can enjoy what the destination has to offer as if you were a local. Through coWorking spaces across the globe, they’ll be plenty of opportunities to network, build relationships, collaborate and travel together.
“We are social creatures and this is a far better way to remote work and travel rather than going solo. We’ve intentionally handpicked a few beautiful destinations that aren’t as mainstream touristy, so that the experience can be rich with local culture, people and language. But on the flip side, we’ve also thrown major cities into the mix. Overall, it’s looking like a pretty awesome itinerary.”
Judging by the steady growth in coWorking spaces globally, it seems reasonably safe to assume that a time will come where the larger tour package brands may start to offer coWorking tour packages, but that will probably also coincide with when (and if) this popular and fast growing sub-culture of coWorking becomes a more mainstream method of doing business and working.
The tour kicks off 1st May 2016 in Madrid, Spain with Europe and Eastern Europe being the first 2 of the 7 legs.
Applications are being accepted via Instagram selfies or direct through the coWork the World website. At first, it seemed like a rather odd way to accept applications through Instagram selfies, but when the question was asked the response was simply;
“Well if Mastercard will be accepting selfies for payments soon and they consider it safer than passwords, then I don’t see what’s odd about it.”
To get your application started and be a part of coWork the World, simply take a selfie on Instagram and tag @coworktheworld / #coworktheworld. Those not on Instagram can jump onto http://www.coworktheworld.com/apply-now to apply direct.
